ABSTRACT

Nitrogen, which is the primary nutrient peach trees need, may affect their fruit quality. Thus, this study aimed at evaluating the effect of nitrogen fertilization on two genotypes of peach trees, regarding their fruit quality, in three consecutive crops. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area that belongs to the Embrapa Clima Temperado, located in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil, from 2016, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Four doses of nitrogen (0, 60, 120 and 180 Kg ha-1) and two peach tree genotypes ('Cascata 1513' and 'Cascata 1067') were used. For the fruit, we evaluated epidermis color, pulp firmness, epidermis firmness, soluble solids concentration, titratable acidity, concentration of total phenolic compounds, anthocyanins and antioxidant activity. Fruit underwent physical, chemical and bioactive compound analyses. Results showed that the highest dose of nitrogen (180 Kg ha-1) applied to the soil retards fruit ripening, while no application of nitrogen fertilization brings fruit maturation forward. Nitrogen fertilization via soil does not favor anthocyanins in fruit. Doses of 60 and 120 Kg ha-1 of nitrogen are recommended because they lead to improvement in peach color, epidermis firmness and acidity. Peach tree genotypes influence soluble solids, juice pH, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of their fruit.

ABSTRACT

The laccase (PpLAC) gene family members in peach fruit were identified and the relationship between their expression pattern and chilling induced browning were investigated. The study was performed using two varieties of peaches with different chilling tolerance, treated with or without exogenous γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) during cold storage. Twenty-six genes were screened from the peach fruit genome. These genes were distributed on 6 chromosomes and each contained 5-7 exons. The PpLAC gene family members shared relatively similar gene structure and conserved motifs, and they were classified into 7 subgroups based on the cluster analysis. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that the expression levels of PpLAC7 and PpLAC9 exhibited an increasing pattern under low temperature storage, and displayed a similar trend with the browning index of peach fruit. Notably, GABA treatment reduced the degree of browning and inhibited the expression of PpLAC7 and PpLAC9. These results suggested that PpLAC7 and PpLAC9 might be involved in the browning of peach fruit during cold storage.

ABSTRACT

Peach tree thinning, whichaims at reducing plant load so as to ensure productivity and fruit quality, has been manually carried out within a short period of time in the stage of fruit development. Due to the need and shortage of qualified man power, chemical thinning is one of the alternatives that can solve these difficulties found in manual thinning. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of different products which have been applied ­ either alone or in combination ­ to fruit thinning of peach tree cultivars 'Sensação' and 'Maciel' in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state, Brazil. The experiment was conducted in the 2015/2016 crop in a commercial peach orchard located in Morro Redondo, RS, Brazil. The following seven treatments were carried out 40 days after full bloom (DAFB): plants with no thinning, manual thinning, metamitron, benzyladenine, benzyladenine + metamitron, ethephon, ethephon + metamitron. Fruit abscission, effective fructification, number of fruits and production per plant, mean mass and fruit classification into caliber classes, epidermis color, pulp firmness and soluble solids were evaluated. Production and number of fruits per plant decreased excessively, whereas fruits placed in categories of higher caliber increased when ethephon was either used alone or in combination with metamitron. When both metamitron and benzyladenine were applied, either alone or in combination, they led to fruit abscission and resulted in mean fruit size and weight, at harvest time, similar to those found in manual thinning. Application of chemical products ­ either alone or in combination ­ may be an alternative of peach tree thinning in orchard management.


O raleio em pessegueiro visa reduzir a carga da planta para assegurar a produtividade e a qualidade dos frutos, sendo realizado manualmente em um curto período durante a etapa de desenvolvimento dos frutos. Devido à exigência e falta de mão de obra qualificada, o raleio químico é uma das alternativas para suprir essa demanda encontrada no raleio manual. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes produtos aplicados de forma isolada ou combinada no raleio de frutos de pessegueiros das cultivares Sensação e Maciel na região de Pelotas. O experimento foi conduzido na safra 2015/2016, em pomar comercial de pessegueiro localizado no município de Morro Redondo, RS. Foram realizados sete tratamentos aos 40 dias após a plena floração, consistindo em plantas sem raleio, raleio manual, metamitron, benziladenina, benziladenina + metamitron, ethephon, ethephon + metamitron. Avaliou-se a abscisão dos frutos, frutificação efetiva, número de frutos e produção por planta, massa média e classificação dos frutos em classes de calibre, coloração da epiderme, firmeza de polpa e sólidos solúveis. A produção e o número de frutos por planta reduziram excessivamente, enquanto a alocação dos frutos em categorias de maior calibre aumentou, quando utilizado o ethephon isolado ou em combinação com o metamitron. O metamitron e a benziladenina aplicados isolados ou em combinação promoveram a abscisão dos frutos e resultaram em tamanho e peso médio dos frutos na colheita semelhantes aos provenientes do raleio manual. Aplicação de produtos químicos isolados ou em combinação pode ser uma alternativa de manejo dos pomares para o raleio de pessegueiros.

ABSTRACT

Nitrogen, which is considered the most important nutrient for peach trees, may interfere in both quantitative production characteristics and quality of fruits. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of the combination of doses of N fertilization and different periods of cold storage on physico-chemical and phytochemical characteristics of peaches in post-harvest. The experiment had a randomized complete block design in a 4x3 factorial scheme, i. e., four doses of fertilization (0, 60, 120 and 180 Kg N ha-1) and three periods of storage (on the harvest day, on both the 15th and the 30th storage days at 1±1ºC, each followed by a day of simulated commercialization at 20±1ºC). The following aspects were evaluated in fruits yielded by peach trees of the genotype Cascata 1067: fruit color, soluble solid content, titratable acidity, pulp firmness, mass loss, total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. Different periods of cold storage and doses of N fertilization were found to affect epidermis luminosity, pulp firmness and titratable acidity of fruits. Peaches may be stored at low temperatures for 15+1 days. After that, loss of fruit firmness increases. N fertilization affects neither the soluble solid content nor the epidermis color of peaches, but both parameters are influenced by storage. Values of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity decrease when there is N increment in the soil and when longer storage is carried out. Results suggest that peach composition may be affected by cultural practices, such as N fertilization, in harvest and after storage.


O nitrogênio é o nutriente considerado de maior importância para o pessegueiro, podendo interferir nas características quantitativas da produção, bem como na qualidade dos frutos. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da combinação de doses de adubação nitrogenada e de diferentes períodos de armazenamento refrigerado nas características físico-químicas e fitoquímicas de pêssegos na pós-colheita. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 4x2, quatro doses de adubação (0, 60, 120 e 180 Kg N ha-1) e três períodos de armazenamento (dia da colheita, aos 15 e 30 dias armazenamento refrigerado a 1±1ºC, seguido de um dia de simulação de comercialização a 20±1ºC). Avaliou-se, nos frutos de pessegueiro do genótipo Cascata 1067, a coloração dos frutos, o teor de sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, firmeza da polpa, perda de massa, compostos fenólicos totais e a atividade antioxidante. Verificou-se que diferentes períodos de armazenamento refrigerado e doses de adubação nitrogenada afetam a luminosidade da epiderme, a firmeza de polpa e a acidez titulável dos frutos. Os pêssegos podem ser armazenados em baixa temperatura até 15+1 dias, após esse período, a perda de firmeza nos frutos é elevada. A adubação nitrogenada não altera o teor de sólidos solúveis e a coloração da epiderme dos pêssegos, mas esses parâmetros são influenciados durante o armazenamento. Os compostos fenólicos e atividade antioxidante decrescem com o incremento de nitrogênio no solo, bem como durante o avanço dos dias de armazenamento. Os resultados sugerem que a composição dos pêssegos pode ser afetada com práticas culturais como a adubação de nitrogênio na colheita e após o armazenamento.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the prevalence of food allergies during childhood is increasing, with fruits being common allergens. However, data on allergens that cause fruit and vegetable allergies and pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS) in childhood are relatively few. This study aimed to examine the allergens in fruit and vegetable allergies in pediatric patients and to determine the association between fruit and vegetable allergies and PFAS.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the current status of fruit and vegetable allergies in Japanese children.METHODS: This was a multicenter case series observational study. The participants included children aged <15 years who developed allergic symptoms after eating fruits and vegetables and subsequently received treatment in the Pediatric Department of 6 hospitals in the Osaka Prefecture in Japan during the study period from August 2016 to July 2017. Participants' information was obtained using a questionnaire, and data were obtained by performing several types of allergy tests using blood samples.RESULTS: A total of 97 children (median age, 9 years; 56 males) were included in the study. Apple was the most common allergen, followed by peach, kiwi, cantaloupe, and watermelon. A total of 74 participants (76%) exhibited allergic symptoms due to PFAS; moreover, pathogenesis-related protein-10 (PR-10) was the most common allergen superfamily. On the contrary, in the group where neither PR-10 nor profilin was sensitized, kiwi and banana were the most common allergens, and the age of onset was lower than that in the PFAS group. Specific antibody titer was significantly associated with Birch for Bet v1 and latex for Bet v2 (r = 0.99 and r = 0.89).CONCLUSION: When we examine patients with fruit and vegetable allergies, we should first consider PFAS even in childhood specifically for children greater than 4 years old.

ABSTRACT

Choosing cultivars that require less chilling temperatures to overcome dormancy is crucial, for example, peaches that grow in subtropical areas, which is not an appropriate climate for them. Thus, alternative techniques are necessary to induce sprouting. Yet there are not many available products in market, restricting options for fruit growers to a reduced number of chemical molecules, which are often harm the health to applicators. Therefore, this study aimed to assess phenological cycles and productive performance of three peach cultivars, submitted to foliar nitrogen fertilizer and calcium nitrate to induce sprouting. This study took place at Experimental Orchard of School of Agriculture (FCA, UNESP), Botucatu, state of São Paulo. Three peach cultivars were evaluated: 'Douradão', 'BRS Kampai' and 'BRS Rubimel' by applying four doses of foliar nitrogen fertilizer (FNF) at 0, 1.25, 2.50 and 3.75%; associated with 4% calcium nitrate. A 3x4 factorial arrangement (3 cultivars X 4 FNF doses) in a randomized block design was used, with 4 replicates and 2 plants per plot, totalizing 96 plants. Results indicated that FNF positively affected cultivars development, providing wider sprouting, flowering and fruit set; consequently, greater production. Then FNF became a good alternative to induce sprouting in peaches at mild winter temperatures. Moreover, 'BRS Rubimel' presented high sowing percentage associated with low flowering and fruit set percentages, that is, low production mainly caused by its lack of adaptability to studied region


A escolha de cultivares mais adaptados, com menor exigência em acúmulo de horas de frio para superação da dormência, é fundamental para o cultivo do pessegueiro em regiões subtropicais. Uma vez que estas regiões não possuem condições ideais para o cultivo do pessegueiro, torna-se necessário a utilização de técnicas alternativas, como a aplicação de indutores de brotação. Entretanto, no mercado ainda existem poucos produtos disponíveis para esta finalidade, restringindo as opções do fruticultor a um número reduzido de moléculas químicas, que muitas vezes apresentam elevada toxicidade ao aplicador. Dentro deste contexto, objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar os ciclos fenológicos e o desempenho produtivo de três cultivares de pessegueiro, submetidos à aplicação de fertilizante foliar nitrogenado e nitrato de cálcio para a indução da brotação das plantas. O trabalho foi realizado no pomar experimental da Faculdade de Ciências Agronômicas da Universidade Estadual Paulista, campus Botucatu, SP. Foram avaliados os cultivares de pessegueiro Douradão, BRS Kampai e BRS Rubimel e quatro doses de fertilizante foliar nitrogenado (FFN): 0; 1,25; 2,50 e 3,75%, associadas a 4% de nitrato de cálcio. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com 12 tratamentos, 4 repetições e 2 plantas por parcela, totalizando 96 plantas, em esquema fatorial, compreendendo 3 cultivares e 4 doses de FFN. O FFN afetou positivamente o desenvolvimento dos cultivares, proporcionando maior brotação, florescimento e fixação de frutos e, consequentemente, maior produção, configurando como boa alternativa para a indução de brotação de pessegueiros em regiões de inverno ameno. O cultivar BRSRubimel apresentou elevado percentual de brotação associado a baixos percentuais de florescimento e fixação de frutos, o que refletiu em menor produção, evidenciando sua menor adaptabilidade à região de Botucatu - SP.

Abstract The development and reproductive potential of Spodoptera eridania (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) was compared on natural and artificial diets. Its biology was determined under laboratory conditions, providing an artificial diet, leaves of white clover and the peach cultivar 'Chimarrita' and fruits and leaves of the apple cultivar 'Gala'. Larvae of S. eridania could not complete their biological cycle when fed on apple fruits or peach leaves. The artificial diet provided the shortest development time, with a cycle of 28.5±0.14 days from egg to adult and 37.3% total viability. Apple leaves led to a longer development time from egg to adult (62.8±1.22 days) and lower total viability (23%) and white clover provided the highest total viability (54.3%). The results showed that S. eridania can use white clover and apple leaves to develop normally in apple orchards. The reduction of food sources such as white clover used by the larvae results in infestation and damage to fruits from "test bites".


Resumo O desenvolvimento e o potencial reprodutivo de Spodoptera eridania (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) foi comparado em dietas naturais e artificial. A biologia de S. eridania foi determinada em condições de laboratório, comparando-se uma dieta artificial com folhas de trevo branco e de pêssego da cultivar 'Chimarrita' e frutos e folhas de maçã da cultivar 'Gala'. As larvas de S. eridania não puderam completar seu ciclo biológico quando alimentadas com frutas de maçã ou folhas de pêssego. A dieta artificial proporcionou o menor tempo de desenvolvimento, com um ciclo completo de 28,5 ± 0,14 dias de ovo a adulto e 37,3% de viabilidade total. As folhas de maçã levaram maior tempo de desenvolvimento de ovo a adulto (62,8 ± 1,22 dias) e menor viabilidade total (23%). O trevo branco apresentou a maior viabilidade total (54,3%). Os resultados mostraram que S. eridania pode usar trevo branco e folhas de maçã para se desenvolver normalmente em pomares de maçã. A redução de fontes alimentares, como o trevo branco usado pelas larvas, resulta em infestação e danos aos frutos através das "mordidas de prova".

ABSTRACT

With increasing need to prevent serious food allergy reactions, Korean food allergen labeling regulation has been revised repeatedly. This paper aims to summarize current statuses of food allergen labeling in Korea and foreign countries and to analyze the issue of food allergen labeling regulation. Korean food labeling regulation currently requires 19 items and 22 foods to be reported on labels (eggs, milk, buckwheat, peanut, soybean, wheat, mackerel, crab, shrimp, pork, peach, tomato, sulfite, walnut, chicken, beef, squid, shellfish, and pine nut). However, some common food triggers (for example, almond, cashew nut, and kiwi fruit) are not included in the current labeling regulation. Another issue is that the Korean labeling regulation has not yet been fully implemented for nonprepacked foods; thus, consumers still have difficulty in correctly identifying allergenic ingredients in food. It should be assessed whether warning statements for cross-contamination are reasonable. To prevent the occurrence of serious reactions from accidental ingestion, efforts must be made to solve recently raised issues including the items required to be listed on food labels, the system of standards for labeling and display methods.

PURPOSE: Many studies have reported that pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS) can cause anaphylaxis. No comprehensive investigations into anaphylaxis in PFAS have been conducted, however. In this study, we investigated the clinical manifestations and risk factors for anaphylaxis in PFAS in Korean patients with pollinosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from a nationwide cross-sectional study that previously reported on PFAS in Korean patients with pollinosis. Data from 273 patients with PFAS were collected, including demographics, list of culprit fruits and vegetables, and clinical manifestations of food allergy. We analyzed 27 anaphylaxis patients and compared them with patients with PFAS with oropharyngeal symptoms only (n=130). RESULTS: The most common cause of anaphylaxis in PFAS was peanut (33.3%), apple (22.2%), walnut (22.2%), pine nut (18.5%), peach (14.8%), and ginseng (14.8%). Anaphylaxis was significantly associated with the strength of sensitization to alder, hazel, willow, poplar, timothy, and ragweed (p<0.05, respectively). Multivariable analysis revealed that the presence of atopic dermatitis [odds ratio (OR), 3.58; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.25–10.23; p=0.017]; sensitization to hazel (OR, 5.27; 95% CI, 1.79–15.53; p=0.003), timothy (OR, 11.8; 95% CI, 2.70–51.64; p=0.001), or ragweed (OR, 3.18; 95% CI, 1.03–9.87; p=0.045); and the number of culprit foods (OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.15–1.37; p<0.001) were related to the development of anaphylaxis in PFAS. CONCLUSION: The most common culprit foods causing anaphylaxis in PFAS were peanut and apple. The presence of atopic dermatitis; sensitization to hazel, timothy, or ragweed; and a greater number of culprit foods were risk factors for anaphylaxis in PFAS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Tree pollen causes allergic rhinitis and asthma. We investigated children who diagnosed as rhinitis or asthma, living in Busan, for tree allergen sensitization, component allergen, oral allergy syndrome, and the relationship between pollen counts and allergen sensitization.METHODS: Pollen were collected in Busan, from January 1 to December 31, 2017, using a Rotorod sampler and enumerated using a microscope. We conducted a study of children with rhinitis or asthma at Busan St. Mary's Hospital in 2017, administered an ISAAC questionnaire, and an oral allergy syndrome survey. Serum specific Ig E tests were performed.RESULTS: Among the 57 patients, the mean age was 9.3 years. The pollen counts in decreasing order were as follows: pine, alder, oak, juniper, beech, ginkgo, and birch. For sensitization, birch and alder 35.1%, Japanese cedar 19.3%, juniper 17.5%, pine 10.5%, and Japanese cypress 8.2%. The component Ig E was tested in 27 patients. Bet v 1 had a high correlation with birch, alder, and peach. Bet v 2 showed a statistically significant correlation with all tree pollen except cypress. Bet v 4 did not have any apparent correlation. Bet v 6 had the same pattern as Bet v 2, but correlation coefficient was higher than that of Bet v 2. Oral allergy syndrome was noted in 7 patients, including peach, peanut, apple, tomato, kiwi, and sesame.CONCLUSIONS: Alder and juniper are clinically important tree pollens in Busan. These pollens cause sensitization to birch and Japanese cedar by cross-reaction.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Little is known about the importance of lipid transfer protein (LTP) sensitization in China. In this study, we investigated the relationship between LTP sensitization and the severity of clinical symptoms in a population of patients with mugwort pollen-related food allergy. METHODS: Food-induced symptoms were evaluated in 148 patients with mugwort pollen allergy by a standardized questionnaire. Specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) to Art v 1, Art v 3, Pru p 3, Ara h 9 and Cor a 8 were quantified by ImmunoCAP. Immunoblotting of peach extracts were performed with sera from peach-allergic patients. RESULTS: In total, 72% (107/148) of the study population experienced food allergy. Forty-eight percent (51/107) of patients with mugwort pollen-related food allergy experienced at least 1 episode of food-induced anaphylaxis. Food allergy correlated with IgE reactivity to Art v 3, but not to Art v 1. Sensitization to Pru p 3, Ara h 9 or Cor a 8 was prevalent (80%, 69 or 63%, respectively) among individuals with food allergy. Food allergic patients with systemic reactions (SR) had higher values for Pru p 3, Ara h 9 and Cor a 8 than patients with oral allergy syndrome (OAS). Furthermore, the strong IgE reactivity detected in immunoblots of peach extracts indicated that Pru p 3 was the major allergen and was more prevalent in patients with SR than in patients with OAS (100% vs. 55%). CONCLUSIONS: LTPs are major food allergens for mugwort pollen-related food allergy in China, and may contribute to SR.

ABSTRACT

A pollen/food-associated syndrome (PFAS) has been described between peach and cypress pollen. Cross-reactive allergens were characterized which belong to the Gibberellin-regulated protein (GRP) family, BP14 in cypress pollen and Pru p 7 in peach. GRP are small cationic protein with anti-microbial properties. A patient suffering from a peach/cypress syndrome was explored clinically and biologically using 2 types of immunoglobulin E (IgE) multiarray microchip, immunoblots and a basophil activation test to assess the clinical relevance of various extracts and purified allergens from fruits or cypress pollen. In addition to PR10 sensitization, the patient showed specific IgE to Pru p 7, BP14 and allergen from pomegranate. These last 3 allergens and allergenic sources are able to induce ex vivo basophil activation characterized by the monitoring of the expression of CD63 and CD203c, both cell surface markers correlated with a basophil mediator release. Up to 100% of cells expressed CD203c at 50 ng/mL of BP14 protein. In contrast, snakin-1, a GRP from potato sharing 82% sequence identity with Pru p 7 did not activate patient's basophils. These results strongly suggest that, like Pru p 7, BP14 is a clinically relevant allergenic GRP from pollen. Allergen members of this newly described protein family are good candidates for PFAS where no cross-reactive allergens have been characterized.

ABSTRACT

This work aimed to evaluate the persistence (duration of harmful activity) of five insecticides used for pest control in peach orchards, on larvae and adults of the predator Chrysoperla externa. The insecticides were sprayed on cv. Bordô vine plants using the maximum dosage recommended for peach orchards. Weekly, at 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 days after spraying, larvae and adults of the predator were exposed to treated leaves in order to assess the residual effect of insecticides on mortality and possible effects on reproduction. Given the toxicity observed along the weekly bioassays, the insecticides were classified into persistence categories established by the International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants (IOBC). High persistence was obtained for the organophosphorus insecticides (% of active ingredient) phosmet (0.100) and malathion (0.200), and both were considered persistent (> 30 days of harmful activity) to larvae and adults of C. externa. Similarly, the benzoylurea insecticide lufenuron (0.005), which acts exclusively on immature stages of insects, was persistent to larvae. Differences concerning the persistence for both development stages evaluated were observed for the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin (0.001), that was persistent to larvae but moderately persistent (16 ­ 30 days of harmful activity) to adults; and for the organophosphate fenthion (0.050) which was considered moderately persistent to larvae and short-lived (< 5 days of harmful activity) to adults of C. externa.(AU)


Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a persistência (duração da atividade nociva) de cinco inseticidas utilizados no controle de pragas em pessegueiro, em larvas e adultos do predador Chrysoperla externa. Os inseticidas foram pulverizados em plantas de videira cv. Bordô utilizando-se a máxima dosagem recomendada para o pessegueiro. Semanalmente, aos 3, 10, 17, 24 e 31 dias após a pulverização, larvas e adultos do predador foram expostos a folhas pulverizadas para determinação do efeito residual dos inseticidas na mortalidade e possíveis efeitos na reprodução. Em função da toxicidade observada ao longo dos bioensaios semanais, os inseticidas foram classificados conforme a escala de persistência da International Organization for Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants (IOBC). Alta persistência foi obtida para os inseticidas (% de ingrediente ativo) fosmete (0,100) e malationa (0,200), sendo ambos considerados persistentes (> 30 dias de ação nociva) para larvas e adultos de C. externa. De forma semelhante, o inseticida do grupo das benzoilureias, lufenurom (0,005), que age exclusivamente sobre estágios imaturos de insetos, foi persistente para larvas. Diferenças quanto a persistência para ambos os estágios avaliados foi observada para o inseticida piretroide deltametrina (0,001), que se mostrou persistente para larvas, porém moderadamente persistente (16 ­ 30 dias de ação nociva) para adultos; e para o organofosforado fentiona (0,050), que foi considerado moderadamente persistente para larvas e de vida curta (< 5 dias de ação nociva) para adultos de C. externa.(AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study examined the prevalence of food allergies and allergenic factors in a selected sample of children living in Seoul, Korea, along with their dietary habits, environmental factors, and diseases as risk factors for food allergy. The results of this study will provide basic data for addressing food allergies.METHODS: We selected 3,004 pre-school and school-age children, aged 0 ~ 12, in the 25 districts of Seoul as the study sample. Structured self-report questionnaires were administered over a two-month period in July-August 2018, and the children's parents recorded the answers on their children's behalf. The research tools in this study included the Korean version of the questionnaire from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC).RESULTS: The physician-diagnosed prevalence rate of food allergies was 14.2%, while 20.4% of the children experienced allergic symptoms at least once and 17.4% reported symptoms within the previous 12 months. The children's symptoms included skin problems (88.1%), gastrointestinal issues (19.2%), oral issues (16.7%), respiratory issues (12.7%), and systemic issues (1.3%). The causes of allergies included eggs, peaches, milk, peanuts, and shrimps. The factors influencing the experience of food allergies were the consumption of cereal (aOR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.09 ~ 2.10; p = 0.013), potatoes (aOR, 1.88; 95% CI, 1.33 ~ 2.65; p < 0.001), and fast food (aOR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.10 ~ 2.72; p = 0.017). Having food allergy symptoms was associated with a higher risk of experiencing asthma (aOR, 4.22 95% CI, 3.10 ~ 5.76; p < 0.001), allergic rhinitis (aOR, 2.53; 95% CI, 2.03 ~ 3.15; p < 0.001), and atopic dermatitis symptoms (aOR, 3.56; 95% CI, 2.88 ~ 4.40; p < 0.001).CONCLUSION: Episodes of food allergies warrant examining regular food consumption and placing dietary restrictions through early diagnosis as these episodes may imply the presence of other allergies. Our findings offer basic insights into the patterns, prevalence and symptoms of children's food allergies in Seoul, and our findings will contribute to identifying effective interventions for food allergies.

ABSTRACT

Os óleos essenciais são complexos naturais formados por cerca de 20 ­ 60 componentes em distintas concentrações, sendo caracterizados por dois ou três componentes presentes em maiores concentrações (20 ­ 70%) quando comparados aos demais. A atividade antibacteriana de muitas plantas deve-se aos compostos sintetizados no metabolismo secundário. Tais produtos são conhecidos por suas substâncias ativas. Este trabalho apresentou como objetivo verificar a ação antibacteriana dos óleos essenciais: bagas de junípero (Junipeus communis), folhas de pêssego (Prunus pérsica), petitgrain mandarina (Citrus deliciosa), rosa de damasco 10% (Rosa damascena) e sucupira branca (Pterodon emarginatus). Os testes foram realizados com os óleos essenciais individualmente e combinados. Os óleos essenciais foram impregnados em discos de papel filtro de 6 mm de diâmetro, próprios para antibiograma, colocados em placas de Petri com meio de cultura apropriado, semeado previamente com os seguintes micro-organismos: Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Enteritidis e Staphylococcus aureus, posteriormente incubadas a 35 °C/ 24 ­ 48 horas. Considerou-se de ação antimicrobiana eficaz aqueles que apresentaram halos iguais ou superiores a 10 mm. Resultados eficazes foram observados para o óleo essencial de folhas de pêssego sobre S. aureus (halo de 60 mm) e S. Typhimurium (halo de 62 mm); óleo essencial de folhas de pêssego e petitgrain mandarina sobre B. subtilis (halo de 62 mm). E. coli foi inibida eficientemente por todos os óleos essenciais testados. A atividade inibitória mais eficaz foi observada para o óleo essencial de folhas de pêssego.


Essential oils are natural complexes formed by 20 to 60 components in varying amounts; being characterized by two or three components present in higher concentrations (20-70%) when compared to the others. The antibacterial activity of many plants is due to the compounds synthesized in the secondary metabolism. Such products are known for their active substances. This research aimed to verify the antibacterial action of essential oils: juniper berries (Junipeus communis), peach leaves (Prunus persica), petitgrain mandarin (Citrus deliciosa), apricot rose 10% (Rosa damascena) and sucupira branca (Pterodon emarginatus). The tests were performed with the essential oils individually and in combination. The essential oils were impregnated into 6 mm diameter filter paper disks, suitable for antibiogram, placed in Petri dishes with appropriate culture medium, previously seeded with the following microorganisms: Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Enteritidis and Staphylococcus aureus, subsequently incubated at 35 °C/24 - 48 hours. Efficient antimicrobial action was considered in those essential oils with halos equal to or greater than 10 mm. Efficient results were observed for the essential oil of peach leaves on S. aureus (60 mm halo) and S. Typhimurium (62 mm halo); for essential oil of peach leaves and petitgrain mandarin on B. subtilis (62 mm halo). E. coli was efficiently inhibited for all essential oils tested. The most effective inhibitory activity observed for the essential oil of peach leaves.

BACKGROUND: We classified the hips of Korean women into 6 types based on shape and contour, and have performed gluteal augmentation using Elastomere implants with lipoplasty of the flank, gluteal fold, and saddle bags of the thigh according to the hip type. METHODS: We analyzed the shapes and contour of the buttocks of 148 patients from September 2009 to September 2015. We performed buttock augmentation with implants using Gonzalez's XYZ method, as well as liposuction and fat injection lipoplasty of the surrounding areas in these 148 patients. RESULTS: We defined the following 6 types: the oval type (30%), the straight type (17%), the peach type (9%), the trapezoid type (20%), the heart type (11%), and the W type (13%). Ninety-seven patients underwent hip augmentation with an implant only or combined with lipoplasty, and 51 patients underwent lipoplasty for buttock shape correction. Patients were followed up for at least 3 months, with the longest follow-up being 4 years. Implants were removed postoperatively in 8 of 97 cases. CONCLUSIONS: The hip augmentation not only involves the simple insertion of implants, but also complex surgical procedures on the surrounding flank and thigh areas. Appropriate procedures should be utilized based on the 6 different hip types to ensure the best outcomes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is a major cause of skin photoaging. Previous studies reported that ethanol extract (PET) of Prunus persica (L.) Batsch flowers (PPF, peach flowers) and its subfractions, particularly the ethylacetate (PEA) and n-butanol extracts (PBT), have potent antioxidant activity and attenuate the UV-induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression in human skin cells. In this study, we investigated the protective activity of PPF extract against UV-induced photoaging in a mouse model. MATERIALS/METHODS: Hairless mice were treated with PET or a mixture of PEA and PBT either topically or orally along with UV irradiation. Histological changes and biochemical alterations of mouse skin were examined. Major phenolic compounds in PPF extract were analyzed using an ACQUITY UPLC system. RESULTS: The overall effects of topical and oral treatments with PPF extract on the UV-induced skin responses exhibited similar patterns. In both experiments, the mixture of PEA and PBT significantly inhibited the UV-induced skin and epidermal thickening, while PET inhibited only the UV-induced epidermal thickening. Treatment of PET or the mixture of PEA and PBT significantly inhibited the UV-induced MMP-13 expression, but not typeⅠ collagen expression. Topical treatment of the mixture of PEA and PBT with UV irradiation significantly elevated catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione-peroxidase (GPx) activities in the skin compared to those in the UV irradiated control group, while oral treatment of the mixture of PEA and PBT or PET elevated only catalase and SOD activities, but not GPx. Thirteen phytochemical compounds including 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid, cimicifugic acid E and B, quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside and kaempferol glycoside derivatives were identified in the PPF extract. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that treatment with PET or the mixture of PEA and PBT, both topically or orally, attenuates UV-induced photoaging via the cooperative interactions of phenolic components having anti-oxidative and collagen-protective activities.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS) is an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergy in pollinosis patients caused by raw fruits and vegetables and is the most common food allergy in adults. However, there has been no nationwide study on PFAS in Korea. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of PFAS in Korea. METHODS: Twenty-two investigators participated in this study, in which patients with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and/or bronchial asthma with pollen allergy were enrolled. The questionnaires included demographic characteristics, a list of fruits and vegetables, and clinical manifestations of food allergy. Pollen allergy was diagnosed by skin prick test and/or measurement of the serum level of specific IgE. RESULTS: A total of 648 pollinosis patients were enrolled. The prevalence of PFAS was 41.7% (n = 270). PFAS patients exhibited cutaneous (43.0%), respiratory (20.0%), cardiovascular (3.7%) or neurologic symptoms (4.8%) in addition to oropharyngeal symptoms. Anaphylaxis was noted in 8.9% of the PFAS patients. Seventy types of foods were linked to PFAS; e.g., peach (48.5%), apple (46.7%), kiwi (30.4%), peanut (17.4%), plum (16.3%), chestnut (14.8%), pineapple (13.7%), walnut (14.1%), Korean melon (12.6%), tomato (11.9%), melon (11.5%) and apricot (10.7%). Korean foods such as taro/taro stem (8.9%), ginseong (8.2%), perilla leaf (4.4%), bellflower root (4.4%), crown daisy (3.0%), deodeok (3.3%), kudzu root (3.0%) and lotus root (2.6%) were also linked to PFAS. CONCLUSIONS: This was the first nationwide study of PFAS in Korea. The prevalence of PFAS was 41.7%, and 8.9% of the PFAS patients had anaphylaxis. These results will provide clinically useful information to physicians.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) is a type of allergic reaction that mainly occurs on oral contact with raw fruit, vegetables, or nuts. The most common type of OAS is birch pollen-related food allergy. Although OAS is a common food allergy in adults, only few epidemiologic studies have been reported in Korea. Here we investigate the prevalence and triggers of birch pollen-related food allergy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 1,427 patients who underwent a skin prick test for inhalant allergens at the Asthma and Allergy Clinic in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from January 2011 to December 2016. RESULTS: Of 1,427 patients, 125 (8.7%) were sensitized to birch pollen. Among them, 20.0% developed OAS, which was the most common food allergy (96.2%). The prevalence of OAS was higher in females, and was 18.2% in birch pollen-sensitized allergic rhinoconjunctivitis patients. Further, 72.0% OAS patients had rhinoconjunctivitis, 20.0% had asthma, and 12.0% had chronic urticaria. Apple (68.0%), peach (56.0%), nuts (36.0%), kiwi (20.0%), persimmon (20.0%), plum (16.0%), and cherry (16.0%) were frequent triggers; however, Chinese yam, kudzu vine, bellflower root, codonopsis, and ginseng were also revealed as triggers. Patients (60.0%) showed OAS with ≥ 3 foods at the same time. Only 3 patients showed mono-sensitivity to birch pollen, while others were multi-sensitized to trees, grasses, weed, or house dust mite allergens. CONCLUSION: OAS was the most common food allergy in birch pollen-sensitized patients. This study revealed the unique triggers of OAS in Korea in addition to well-known triggers.

ABSTRACT

Dual biocontrol of both insects and plant pathogens has been reported for certain fungal entomopathogens, including Beauveria bassiana and Lecanicillum spp. In this study, we demonstrate, for the first time, the dual biocontrol potential of two fungal isolates identified by morphological and phylogenetic analyses as Isaria javanica. Both these isolates caused mortality in the greater wax moth, and hence can be considered entomopathogens. Spores of the isolates were also pathogenic to nymphs of the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), with an LC₅₀ value of 10⁷ spores/mL 4 days after inoculation and an LT₅₀ of 4.2 days with a dose of 10⁸ spores/mL. In vitro antifungal assays also demonstrated a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of two fungi that are pathogenic to peppers, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Phytophthora capsici. These results indicate that I. javanica isolates could be used as novel biocontrol agents for the simultaneous control of aphids and fungal diseases, such as anthracnose and Phytophthora blight, in an integrated pest management framework for red pepper.
